UPI
UPI links a payment instruction to an Indian bank account through a participating app or institution. Merchant support, eligibility, and transaction limits must be checked in the current payment flow.
Confirm the payee and amount in the payment request, then approve only inside your verified bank or UPI app. NPCI says the UPI PIN authorizes a bank transaction and should not be shared with another person or entered in response to a message.
NPCI describes UPI as an instant payment system that supports transfers between bank accounts and merchant payments through participating providers. Registration, linked-account requirements, app support, and transaction limits can depend on the bank, payment app, and transaction category.
For an online merchant flow, verify the payment address or displayed payee before approving the request. Enter your PIN only in the trusted payment app's authorization screen. A merchant page asking you to send a PIN, OTP, or password through chat, email, or a separate form is not a safe substitute for the official approval flow.
After approval, review the app's success or pending state and save the transaction reference. If the bank shows a debit but the merchant does not show credit, do not repeat the payment immediately. Check the bank or app's current dispute/status path and provide the reference through official support.
Before approving a UPI request
- Check the payee or UPI address and exact amount
- Approve only in the verified bank or UPI app
- Never disclose a UPI PIN or OTP to a person or merchant
- Save the status and reference if the credit is delayed
Protect the authorization step
- A request notification does not prove the payee is correct
- UPI PINs authorize transactions; do not share them
- Merchant acceptance and transaction limits vary by provider and current terms
Open the transaction in your bank or UPI app and verify the payee, amount, and status before taking another step.
