Prepaid Cards
A prepaid card can help separate a spending balance, but acceptance, online-use settings, and refund handling depend on the issuer and merchant.
Before paying, confirm online and international use are enabled if relevant, the card has enough available balance for the full authorization, and the merchant accepts that card type. Check separately how refunds or withdrawals are handled.
The printed balance may not equal the amount available for a new transaction if funds are reserved or pending. Read the issuer's current balance and authorization guidance, and leave room for any amount the checkout screen says it may reserve.
Some prepaid products have restrictions on merchant categories, recurring payments, currency conversion, or cash-like transactions. The issuer's terms and the merchant's checkout are the right places to confirm; a card brand alone does not settle acceptance.
If the payment fails, check the issuer balance and transaction history before trying again. For a refund, ask where it will be returned and how the issuer reports it. Keep the receipt and reference, but do not share full card credentials in a public message.
Before checkout
- Issuer permits the intended online transaction
- Available balance accounts for pending holds
- Merchant accepts the specific prepaid product
- Refund and payout route understood
Plan for product-specific restrictions
- Prepaid cards may differ from standard debit cards
- A pending authorization can reduce available balance temporarily
- Do not assume a refund returns instantly or to a different destination
Check the issuer's current card terms and the merchant's payment screen before relying on a prepaid card for a deposit or purchase.
